Black History Month Essay Contest

Calling all 1st through 6th graders in Chatham, Effingham, and Liberty Counties!

Leopold’s is holding an essay contest in honor of Black History Month! Winners get Leopold’s ice cream party in their classroom!

If you were Mayor for the day and choosing one influential African-American in history to celebrate, who would it be and why?

  • Entries will be accepted from February 1st – February 18th at Leopold’s Ice Cream, 212 East Broughton Street or any branch of the Live Oak Public Library.
  • Entries will be split into two categories: 1st through 3rd grades and 4th through 6th grades. Each category will have one winner, announced by Mayor Otis Johnson!
  • All essays should be on 8.5 x 11” paper, preferably typed. If not typed, handwriting must be neat and legible.
  • Four copies of each paper must be submitted.
  • No more than 1,000 words.
  • Essays should include your name, school, grade, and e-mail address.
  • Be creative! You can choose an important historical figure, a politician, athlete, or even one of your teachers!

Entries must be submitted between February 1st and February 18th. No submissions will be accepted after the 18th.
